Getting a Replacement Prosthesis - Part 1: Determining whether you need a replacement



Have you found that your socket isn't fitting too well lately? Are you experiencing pain in your residual limb? What about skin breakdown or sore spots? How old is your current prosthesis? Poor socket fit can lead to instability and falling. Pain that occurs in your residual limb may be an indicator of a change in the volume of your residual limb. Many times an adjustment can be done to alleviate this type of pain, but only if the change in volume is minimal. You may need a replacement prosthesis.

If your current prosthesis is over three years old, you may be in need of a replacement, as wear and tear can deteriorate components as well as the socket. It's equally important to remember that many components such as microprocessor knees and prosthetic feet have warranties of three years or less, depending on the manufacturer.

Once you have made a decision to get a replacement prosthesis, we suggest you make an appointment to come in and talk about your options. During your appointment, we will take care of any adjustments and/or repairs that are needed and discuss the reason or reasons for your decision to get a replacement. We will talk about all the different components that are available and answer any questions you might have about the process of obtaining a new prosthesis.
